After the Removal of Multiple Teeth

Home Instructions After the Removal of Multiple Teeth

After a procedure to remove multiple teeth, follow the personalized postoperative instructions provided by Dr. Strickland and our team. Your recovery needs will depend on the number of teeth removed and whether other procedures were performed at the same appointment.

Bleeding

Some minor bleeding or blood-tinged saliva may occur after surgery. Follow our team’s instructions for placing gauze over the extraction sites and applying steady pressure. Avoid touching the wounds or disturbing the blood clots.

If your mouth fills rapidly with blood, bleeding remains heavy, or it does not improve with the recommended measures, contact our office promptly for further instructions.

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising can occur after multiple extractions. The amount varies depending on the procedure and your individual response.

Use cold packs according to the instructions provided by our team. Place a cloth between the pack and your skin, and take breaks between applications. Contact our office if swelling is severe, continues to worsen, or is accompanied by fever or other concerning symptoms.

Eating and Drinking

Choose fluids and soft foods that are comfortable to consume, following your personalized dietary instructions. Avoid chewing directly over the extraction sites, and be careful while your mouth is numb to avoid biting your lips, cheeks, or tongue.

If implants or fixed temporary teeth were placed during the same appointment, follow the specific dietary restrictions provided for that treatment. Feeling comfortable does not necessarily mean the implants are ready for normal chewing.

Keeping Your Mouth Clean

Follow our team’s instructions about when and how to clean your mouth after surgery. Clean unaffected areas gently and avoid disturbing the extraction sites. Contact our office if you are unsure how to care for a particular area.

Rest and Activity

Rest after surgery and follow the activity restrictions provided by your treating team. If activity causes bleeding, throbbing, or lightheadedness, stop and rest.

If you received IV sedation, follow your discharge instructions and have a responsible adult assist you during recovery as directed.

If Your Extractions Are Part of All-on-X Treatment

When teeth are removed as part of an All-on-X treatment plan, your postoperative care must protect both the extraction sites and the newly placed implants. If a fixed temporary bridge is attached, do not attempt to remove or adjust it yourself.

Our team will explain how to clean around your restoration, which foods are appropriate during healing, and when to attend follow-up appointments. Contact us if your temporary bridge feels loose, breaks, or causes an unexpected change in your bite.
