Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. It contains a fibrin framework, platelets, and other blood components involved in the body’s natural healing process. PRF may be used during selected dental procedures to support healing.

At Gateway Dental Columbus, the blood sample is collected through a separate venipuncture, meaning a dedicated blood draw from a vein. It is not drawn through your IV. The sample is then processed in a centrifuge to prepare the PRF for use during treatment.

How Does PRF Support Healing?

Platelets release growth factors that participate in tissue repair. The fibrin framework in PRF helps hold these components at the treatment site and provides a structure that supports the healing process.

For selected dental implant and bone-grafting procedures, Dr. Strickland may combine PRF with bone substitute particles to support healing at the treatment site. The potential benefit depends on the procedure and your individual health. PRF does not guarantee faster healing, additional bone growth, or a successful implant outcome.

When May PRF Be Used?

PRF may be considered as part of treatment involving:

  • Tooth extraction sites.
  • Bone grafting in preparation for dental implants.
  • Selected procedures to rebuild areas of the jawbone.
  • Soft tissue healing around a surgical site.

Dr. Strickland will explain whether PRF is appropriate for your procedure and how it fits into your treatment plan.

Potential Advantages of PRF

  • Prepared from your own blood: PRF uses your own blood components rather than blood from a donor.
  • Convenient preparation: PRF can be prepared in the office during your treatment appointment.
  • Support for healing: PRF provides a fibrin framework and growth factors involved in tissue repair.
  • Use with graft materials: PRF can be combined with selected bone substitute materials to help hold the particles together during placement.

Frequently Asked Questions About PRF

Is PRF Safe?

PRF is prepared from your own blood, but a blood draw and dental procedure still carry risks. These may include bruising, discomfort, bleeding, or infection at the blood-draw site. Dr. Strickland will review your medical history to determine whether PRF is appropriate for you.

A small blood sample is collected through a separate venipuncture, not through your IV. The sample is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the components needed to prepare PRF.

Should PRF Be Used in All Bone-Grafting Cases?

No. PRF is not necessary for every bone-grafting procedure. Dr. Strickland will consider the treatment site, the planned graft, and your health before recommending whether to include it.

What Does PRF Cost?

The fee for PRF application at Gateway Dental Columbus is $775 and is the patient’s responsibility. Our team will review this charge with you before treatment.

Will My Insurance Cover PRF?

Gateway does not participate in dental insurance plans or submit insurance claims. Payment for PRF is made directly to our office. If you choose to seek reimbursement, confirming benefits and submitting any claim are your responsibility. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Can PRF Replace Bone Graft Material?

PRF and bone graft materials serve different purposes. PRF may be used alone in selected situations or combined with a bone substitute when additional support is needed. It is not a replacement for graft material in every case. Dr. Strickland will explain the approach recommended for your procedure.

Are There Any Contraindications to PRF?

Some medical conditions, including bleeding disorders, platelet disorders, and other blood diseases, may make PRF unsuitable or require additional medical evaluation. Medications that affect bleeding or platelet function are also important to discuss.

Tell Dr. Strickland about your medical conditions and all medications and supplements you take. Do not stop or change any medication unless your treating clinician instructs you to do so. Dr. Strickland will determine whether PRF is appropriate for your care.
